Volunteers

Credit unions could not function without the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers.

Opportunities
Full training is provided for volunteers in all aspects of the credit union service. Experience in finance is not necessary, but enthusiasm is essential. You can volunteer for whatever role you think would suit you best, such as a:

  • Cashier (Teller) - records people’s savings, loan repayments and enrols new members
  • Board Member - elected by members to be responsible for the management and policies of the Credit Union
  • Credit Committee Officer - makes decisions on loan applications
  • Supervisory Committee Officer - responsible for internal audit of records and policies of the credit union
  • Occasional Helper - assists with publicity, displays and leafleting

What is involved?
The amount of time a credit union volunteer gives depends entirely on the individual. It can vary from a couple of hours a fortnight to 3-4 hours a week. Anyone who is willing to help out is greatly appreciated.

Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering with a credit union can lead to many transferable skills and experiences including:

  • Marketing
  • Committee skills
  • Business planning
  • Credit control
  • Customer service

Through involvement with a credit union volunteers also have the opportunity to:

  • improve and share their skills
  • learn about money management
  • meet new people
  • make a  significant  contribution to serving  their local  community

Many credit union volunteers go on to enjoy full time employment in the financial services industry.
